2011 Incheon fishing incident

The 2011 Incheon fishing incident occurred on December 12, 2011 in Socheong Island, Incheon, South Korea. The incident involved a Chinese fisherman from the People's Republic of China said to be fishing illegally.[1] During the confrontation two Incheon coast guards were stabbed.[1][2]

Incident

At 87km southwest of Socheng Island a 66 ton Chinese trawler named "Yogeumuh" rammed into the Coast guard ship. Then the 9 Chinese crew members rebelled.[3][4] The boat was seized by the South Korean coast guards for illegal fishing.[1] The skipper of the Chinese boat then stabbed two Incheon Coast Guards. Coast guard Lee Cheong-ho died after being stabbed in the ribs.[3] Lee Nak-hoon was wounded after stabbed in the abdomen.[1]

Aftermath

In Seoul minister of foreign affairs Park Suk-hwan requested the PRC ambassador to South Korea Zhang Xinsen (张鑫森) make a statement about illegal fishing and the fisherman's use of violence.[3] On December 8, Zhang just said the government is "increasing education" for its fishermen.[5] There were no apologies by the Chinese government. Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin expressed hope that Korea will fully protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese fishermen and provide humanitarian treatment.[6]
