Adam and Eve and Pinch Me (2001) is a psychological thriller novel by English crime writer Ruth Rendell.[1]

Synopsis

A handsome con man with numerous aliases, including Jerry Leach and Jock Lewis, manipulates three vulnerable women into handing over large sums of money. After he supposedly dies in the Paddington train crash, they realise his deception and find themselves in serious debt. However, one of his many victims, ex-fiancée Minty, thinks she has seen his 'ghost' wandering around and begins carrying a knife so she can exact revenge on his 'spirit'...

Explanation of the novel's title

The title is derived from an old children's game, whereby one will ask: "Adam and Eve and Pinch-Me went down to the river to play; Adam and Eve were drowned, so who do you think was saved?" When the other participant replies "Pinch-Me", the questioner proceeds to do so!
