Ammachatram is a small and peaceful developing village situated 6KM from Kumbakonam (Temple Town) to Mayiladuthurai route on [State Highway (SH - 64)] and 277 km away from Chennai. The village is called Mela Ammachatram (West) and Ammachatram (East) that's centered in between UmaMaheswarapuram, Thirunageswaram(Famous for Rahu and Oppiliappan temple), Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai which is nearby the panchayat of Thepperumalnallur (famous for its Bhagavatha mela) and comes under Kumbakonam and Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk in Thanjavur District. Ammachatram is a village in Kumbakonam taluk, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. As per the 2001 census, Ammachatram had a population of 2947 with 1499 males and 1448 females.2010 census may tell the development scenario which is expected at the earliest.

An ancient village prescribed in "Bavishyotta puranam" as "Bairavapuram" after some period it was called "Sakkuvambalpuram" or "Ammani Ammal Chatiram", presently pronounced as Ammachatiram in Tamil.

Temple

The 1500 Years old temple is familiared for its Kalabairavar stalam on its Ancient Shiva temple. The lord Name is Saptharishiswarar and Deities name is Gnanambikai, Five Lingams (including moolavar), Vinayakar, Dhakshnamurthi, Murugan, Mahalakshmi, Lingothbavar,Vishnu, Durga, Chandikeshwarar, Kalabairavar, Saneeswarar, Suriyan, Chandiran, etc. The temple has two stala vritchams one is Vilva tree and another one is Jackfruit tree. The temple was built by Chola Kings and still maintained by Thanjavur Palace.

The Full moon Ashtami pooja for Kalabairavar is very familiar for its great power of solving the problems and giving remedies to life.

Saptharishsis were prayed this Lord and they arranged the marriage for this Moolavar that is why the Lord name is called Saptharishiswarar and the deity name is Gnanambikai will give the brilliance and stability to withstand the karmas in life. In Bavishyaotta Purana this place is mentioned as a Sin relief place as like as Kasi (Varanasi) because of the Kalabairavar who is blessing here will give protection from all the eight directions.

About the place:

The largest Community living here is Padayachi sub caste of Vanniyars. Mr. Kathaperumal Padayachi (Late) who has helped the poor throughout his lifetime. who has played a major role in building temples and refurbishment of some important temples around the village. once in 70's when there was heavy in the village, most of the village has no money to get food. Mr. Kathaperumal Padayachi who worried about the poor seriously, gave all the rice which he harvested from his own land. Still he lives in the memories of the Ammachatram people and the family still called 'Nattamaikargal' means leader. The place has lots of Nagar and streets. The Mela Ammachatram is also called Cholan Nagar because previously CRC (now TNSTC Kumbakonam) had built their staff quarters here. The literacy rate of the village is almost 85%. The village has Post office, Co-operative society, Rations shop, Two nursery Schools, Three marriage halls, Computer center, fancy shops, Hardware's, Furniture mart, Saloons, Tailoring shops and more than five Daily shopping mart in it.

One Nursing school also available in 1 km from the place called Pillaiyampettai (Now called Puliam pettai). Ammachatram village is very comfortable for its frequent transportation by bus, as well as Car and Auto rickshaws also available to go to work, schools, shopping and temples etc. If by train we have to travel 1 km on Thirunageswaram route for station. Doordarshan Relay station transmitting radio waves from Ammachatram and it has an Aluminium vessels making industry also in it.

By Bus  : 1,17,27,33,46,54,64 no town buses, Kumbakonam - Mayiladuthurai route buses and Some mini buses. (Cholan Nagar or Ammachatram stopping)

By Train  : Kumbakonam to Mayiladuthurai Train (Thirunageswaram stop.)

By Air  : Trichy is the very nearest Airport, from there to Kumbakonam 2.30 hrs drive. From Kumbakonam 5 - 10 min drive by road to Ammachatram. From Chennai airport also road transportation is well connected and journey hrs 6.30 hrs by Bus to Kumbakonam.
