Andreas Makris (Greek: Αντρέας Μακρής; born 27 November 1995) is a Greek Cypriot football striker, who currently plays for Walsall and the Cypriot National Team.[1][2] He was awarded with the award for the best youth player in Cyprus for the season 2013–14 on 13 May 2014.[3]

Early life

Makris was born in Paphos, a child of Tasos Makris, an old player of Evagoras Paphos.[4] he graduated from the 3rd high school of St. Neophytos in Paphos and serving his military service in Koshi in Larnaca.[4]

Club career

Makris began his football career at Olimpico academies of Paphos. Then to Arsenal soccer school of Paphos to make a step above Atromitos Yeroskipou. Notable is the call for a trial for AEK Athens and Milan. From Atromitos moved to AEP Paphos where he remained for four years. With the team of AEP Paphos B he scored 21 goals for the period 2011-12. So not long in coming call for the first team the period 2012-2013.[4] The season 2013-2014 Makris made a step above with the transfer to Anorthosis Famagusta on 28 January, for 5years.[5] He plays as a second striker but because of his body and its velocity can be play with the same ease and as winger forward.

AEP Paphos

Makris joined AEP Paphos' first team as a youth player at the age of 17.

Makris made his team debut as a 54th-minute[6] substitute in a 4–2 away defeat from Omonia Nicosia.[7] He scored his first goal for AEP Paphos over Olympiakos Nicosia on 9 December 2012.[7] And his second season goal over Ayia Napa.[7] At the end of the season Makris had 16 games and 2 goals with the first team of AEP Paphos.[8]

Anorthosis Famagusta

Makris became the first transfer of Anorthosis for the 2013-14 season[5] when he signed for €20.000 from AEP Paphos.

Makris made his team debut as a 78th-minute substitute in a 3–0 away victory over Nea Salamis on 30 November 2013.[9] He scored his first goal for Anorthosis over Alki Larnaca on 11 January 2014 at 77th minute.[10][11] On 16 January, Real Madrid C showed interest to sign Makris, but no agreement was reached because the player could not leave the country because of the military service.[12][13] On 17 January 2013, Cyprus Olympic Committee announced the best teenage athletes for 2013, Best Teen footballer was Andreas Makris of Anorthosis.[14][15] He scored his second goal over AEK Kouklia on 25 January 2014 at 91st minuit.[16] He scored his first goal in Cypriot Cup for Anorthosis against AEK Larnaca on 29 January.[17] On 6 February, Everton showed interest to buy 50% of the player's rights.[18][19][20][21] On 27 February 2014, Juventus[22] and Borussia Dortmund[23] contact with Anorthosis to sign Makris for the next season.[24][25] On 13 May 2014, Makris awarded with the award of the best youth player in Cyprus for the season 2013-14.[3] At the end of the season Makris had 25 appearances with Anorthosis in the league (13 in the starting lineup) and 2 appearances in the cup (1 in the starting lineup).[26]

The first appearance for Makris for the season 2014-15 was in the "first" matchday against Omonia Nicosia when he substitute Ede at 59th minute.[27] On 27 September 2014, Makris scored his first goal for the season against Ayia Napa at 55th minute.[28][29] He scored his second goal of the season on 3 November 2014 when Anorthosis faced Nea Salaina in Ammochostos Stadium.[30][31] On 22 November 2014, Makris scored two goals against Doxa Katokopias.[32][33] at the end of the match Makris announch their contract re-new with Anorthosis for the next 5years.[34] On 14 December 2014, Makris scored his 5th goal against Omonia Nicosia, after the mistake of goalkeeper of Omonia and nearby, gave precedence to Anorthosis 2-1.[35] Makris scored another 2 goals against Ayia Napa, on January 11, 2015.[36] On 18 January 2015, Makris scored his 8th goal against AEL Limassol, that goal selected as one of the best goal of the season.[37][38] On 1 February 2015, he scored his 9th goal against Othellos Athienou.[39] Andreas Makris awarded with the award of the best player of the month January on February 5.[40] In the playoffs Makris scored four more goals 1 goal against Ermis Aradippou on 14 March, 1 goal against Apoel Nicosia on 25 April, one goal against Omonia Nicosia on 9 May and his last goal was against Apollon Limassol on 16 May.[41] On 26 May, Makris announced in the best line-up of the season as the best striker of the season,[42] his stats was 13 goals in 30 appearances and became the first Cypriot scorer of the season, without seeing a yellow card.[41] The goal of Makris against AEL Limassol[37] awarded as the second best goal of the season in Cyprus.[43]

Walsall

On 1 August 2016, Makris signed for Walsall, for a club record fee believed to be in the region of €300,000.[44]

International career

In October 2013, Makris was a member of the team that qualified to UEFA European Under-19 Championship elite round.[45] He played 3 matches and he scored 4 goals.[46] He was the runner-up of the top scorers in the competition.[47] He scored 1 goal in the match against Czech Republic, 2 goals against Croatia and 1 goal against Gibraltar.[46]

On 27 February 2014, Pambos Christodoulou called Makris[48] to the first team of Cyprus national team for the friendly against Northern Ireland.[49]

Makris made his team debut with Cyprus national team as an 85th-minute substitute in a 0–0 home draw against Northern Ireland on 6 March 2014.[50]

On 25 May 2014, Makris took a part to UEFA European Under-19 Championship elite round, he played in all 3 matches, without scoring any goal. Cyprus took the 4th place in the group with 0 pts.[51]

On 10 October 2014, Makris played in the starting line up of Cyprus national football team against Israel, when Cyprus defeated 1-2 in the GSP Stadium.[52]

On 16 November 2014, Makris played for 44 minutes against Andorra when he changed Stathis Aloneftis at the beginning of the second half in the home victory 5-0.[53]
