Anton Saurma von der Jeltsch

Johann Anton Freiherr Saurma von der Jeltsch, also known as von Saurma-Jelsch or Saurma-Lorzendorf (27 March 1836 Adelsdorf - 28th April 1900 Brauchitschdorf, Lüben) was a German diplomat.

Life

He was born as son of the Alexander Count von Saurma-Lorzendorf and the Luise née Countess Frankenberg and Ludwigsdorff. He studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. In 1856, he became a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn.^[1] In 1862, he entered the diplomatic service, first with the legation, then as an attaché in Paris. After he had participated as a Prussian Landwehr Commissioner in the German War, he led the business of various embassies. In 1872, he became legation councilor. In 1873 he was appointed embassy councilor in Constantinople. In 1875 he became a German consul-general in Belgrade and in 1876 in Alexandria. In 1882 he became a German minister at the Romanian court in Bucharest and in 1885 at the Dutch court in The Hague. In 1891 he became a Prussian minister at the Court of Stuttgart in Stuttgart.

In 1893 he became the first German ambassador in the United States of America; in 1895 to the Ottoman Porte in Constantinople; and in 1897 to the Italian court in Rome. In 1899, he retired from the.

He was married to Margarethe Gräfin von Hatzfeldt.
