Ashok Kumar Mago is an Indian born American business person and the founder Chairman of Greater Dallas Indo American Chamber, now known as (US-INDIA Chamber of Commerce)[1] who is known for his involvement of the Senate India caucus.[2] He was awarded the Padma Shree, the fourth highest civilian award, by the Government of India, in 2014, for his services to the trade and industry.[3]

Biography

I want to commend Chairman Mago on his leadership and dedication to the chamber and giving the local Indian community a united voice. His belief in giving back to his community is admirable and evident in his actions, such as raising hundreds and thousands of dollars for charities and generously devoting his time to serve in numerous civic organizations US Congressional Record (Proceedings and Debates of US Congress)[4]

Ashok Kumar Mago was born in India where he did his early schooling and migrated to the US, landing at Dallas Fort Worth, in 1974.[1][5] Later, he obtained a master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Texas at Dallas[1][6] and started Mago and Associates, a private Management Consulting firm, in 1991.[2]

Soon, he was active in the social and civic milieu of Dallas and in 1993, he was appointed as the Commissioner of the Plan and Zoning Commission of the City of Dallas.[1] This was followed by numerous positions of which one of special note is that of the * Director of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport Board, in 2002,[1] the same airport where he landed as an immigrant in 1974.[5] In between, he founded the Greater Dallas Indo-American Chamber of Commerce,(Now known as US-INDIA Chamber of Commerce) in 1999, of which he was the founder Chairman.[1] He is also credited with efforts in raising millions of dollars for the Asian organizations based in Dallas.[7]

Mago's contribution in the creation of Senate India Caucus is generally known.[2] In 2004, Mago invited Senator Cornyn for an India visit when he mooted the idea of forming a caucus to the Senator.[8] After returning from the trip, Senator Cornyn, along with Senator Hillary Clinton, founded the Senate India Caucus. It is reported that no other country has an individual caucus in the US Senate.[9] This caucus played a crucial part in the passing of the civil nuclear bill.[8]

Ashok Kumar Mago is married to Monica and the couple has a son, Ajay and a daughter, Anita. Mago lives in Dallas, attending to his business and other social duties.[5][6]

Positions held

Ashok Kumar Mago has held various positions of importance since 1993. He was the founder of Greater Dallas Indo-American Chamber of Commerce which he helped establish in 1999 and served as the Chairman till 2003.[1]

He is the member Salvation Army Advisory Board of Dallas County and Dallas County Community College District Foundation Board, Dallas Regional Chamber Board, Primary Care Clinic Board, posts he has been holding since 2001 and 2002,2009,2011 respectively.[1] Governor Greg Abbott has appointed A.K. Mago to the University of North Texas System Board of Regents for terms set to expire on May 22, 2021.

He was also a former Member of such organizations like Dallas Citizens Council, Leadership Dallas Alumni Association Board, Dallas Museums of Arts Board of Trustees, Dallas Symphony Board, North Texas Commission Board, Dallas Mayor’s Asian Advisory Board, Dallas County Park and Open Space Board, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Board, Chancellor’s Advisory Board-Dallas Community College District.[1][6]

Awards and recognitions

He has also received the Distinguished Alumni Award, Leadership Dallas Alumni Association in 1994 and was a nominee for Linz Award in 1996.[1][6]
