Balu Naik Thanda (also known as Balu Thanda or Janu Thanda) is a village/thanda in Mahbubnagar district of Telangana, India.[1] It falls under Madgul Mandal.[2] It is 3 km from Madgul Mandal.[3][4][5] Jairam Thanda is the neighbouring thanda both are known as twin thandas. It is the home town of politician Chandu Naik Ramawat, who served as the member of Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency.

Origin of Balu Naik Thanda

The Thanda community started with 'The Great' Ramawat 'Ramulu Naik' and his five sons, Rupla, Boda, Bheema, Jodha and Janu. Originally Ramulu Naik came from Pasnoor,Devarakonda Taluka, Nalagonda, Telangana. He settled in a tribal place after returning from nagarkarnool and later that place was named Balu Naik Thanda after his grandson Balu Naik.

Rules and regulations in Thanda

In Jairam Thanda and Balu Naik Thanda people refuse to drink alcohol, but they can drink Sindi (Kallu in Telugu), simply Toddy in English. (it is an alcoholic beverage created from the sap of various species of palm tree such as the Palmyra, and coconut palms).

They will only eat vegetarian food on Saturdays and at some festival and occasions; these rules were made by Jairam Bapuji the Originator of Jairam Thanda.[6]

Religious persons and beliefs

People in Balu Thanda and Jairam Thanda[7] pray and believe in Moto Bapu, Nanikya Bapu. Jairam Bapuji (Budiya Bapu) and Sevya Bapuji from Jairam Thanda and Janu Naik and Rupla Naik form Balu Thanda.

They also believe and worship Tulja bhavani (Mouli), Merama, Matram Mouli and also Lord Hanuman, Ram and Balaji. They also visit Jangli Peer and Place Peer in Their Farm fields as a belief of protection to their crops.

In the Pioneer of Sevya Bapuji, they built Temples of Moto Bapu, Nanikya Bapu at Buldi in Mustepalli, Devarakonda Taluka, Nalagonda,Telangana. and visit the holy palace once a year and Also built temples of Jairam Bapuji in Jairam Thanda. Both Balu Thanda and Jairam Thanda People worship them together always.

Balu Naik Thanda people built a temple for Tulja Bhavani (Mouli) in the pioneer of Chandu Naik Ramawat and they also build Maats for Rupla Naik and Janu Naik in Thanda.[8]

Culture

The Lambadi customs, language and dress indicate they originated from Rajasthan. They live in settlements called Tandas. Historically, they lived in zupadas (huts), but now many of them live in towns and cities.

Language

The language spoken by the Lambadis in Balu Naik Thanda is a mixture of Lambadi and Telugu.

Food

The traditional food of the Lambadis is Bati, which is Roti. They also enjoy daliya, a dish cooked using wheat and jawar. Solai is a non-vegetarian dish made exclusively by Lambadi. Spicy food is prevalent in their diet.

Dress

Women wear colorful costumes, with mirror chips and coins, such as Phetiya (a Ghagra) and Kanchalli (a top) and adorn their hands with tattoos. Women put thick bangles on their arms (Patli). Their accessories are silver rings, coins, chains and hair pleats tied together at the end by Chotla. Men wear Dhoti and Kurta [shorts with many folds]. These garments were designed for protection from the harsh desert climate, as well as to distinguish them from other tribes.

Dance

Lambadi dance (Folk dance in India) is very famous in the thanda and also possess other dance styles from other Indian culture.

Economy and education

The traditional commerce are agriculture and trade. Lambanis are also nomadic cattle herders. and how a day people have been employed mostly in Studying [9] and farming.[10]

Thanda comprises a Primary School[11][12] and most of the youths in thanda are literate and a few are pursuing Graduates and Post-Graduates Courses in Education and very few are employed.[13]
