Barry Corr (born 2 April 1985) is an Irish professional footballer who plays for English club Cambridge United.
Club career
Corr started his career at St. Anthony's, Kilcoole before moving to Leeds United, and then onto Sheffield Wednesday. At Wednesday he spent loan spells with Bristol City and Swindon Town.[2][3][4] He signed for Swindon on a permanent basis at the start of the 2007–08 season, later moving to Exeter City in July 2009. He left the club at the end of the season.[5]
Southend United
Corr signed for Southend United on 9 July 2010 along with Peter Gilbert, both of whom had played previously for Southend's manager Paul Sturrock at Sheffield Wednesday.[6] From 47 appearances he netted 21 goals for the Shrimpers, making him the club's highest scorer that season.[7] Corr missed out on the 2011–12 season due to an ongoing knee injury[8] but returned on 22 September 2012 to score against former club Exeter. He spent most of the 2012–13 season on the bench due to the good form of Gavin Tomlin and loanee Britt Assombalonga, but became a mainstay of the team the following season as Sturrock was replaced with Phil Brown.[9] On 26 June 2013, Corr signed a new two-year deal with Southend, much to present manager Phil Brown's delight after a degree of speculation and uncertainty around Corr's tenure at Southend.[10] He made his 150th appearance for the Blues on 27 September 2014 against Shrewsbury[11]
Corr left Southend United in June 2015 and joined Cambridge United. His exit was a shock to the fans and more so to the club whom has been in talks with Corr about renewing his contract. Club Chairman Ron Martin is quoted "It's come as news to me that Barry will be leaving and I think it's the same for everyone else at the club as well. It's disappointing there wasn't more communication from him and I'm sure it's disappointing for the fans as well that he's left."
Cambridge United
Corr signed a two-year deal with Cambridge United on 2 June 2015.[12] On the opening day of the new season, on his debut, Corr scored two of the three goals in a 3–0 victory over Newport County. Barry went on to score important goals vs Carlisle, Afc Wimbledon,York and Bristol Rovers. Corr is well known for his strength and aerial ability in the box. He is the vice captain for CUFC and has scored a variety of goals with his head and feet with some coming from the penalty spot. However, on 28 January 2016, it was announced that he would need to have knee surgery and would be out for the rest of the season.[13]
