Bidit Lal Das (15 June 1938 – 8 October 2012), commonly known as Potol Babu, was a Bangladeshi folk singer and composer from Sylhet.[1]

Early life and career

Das was born in a Zamidar family named Lal Brothers House in Sylhet. His grandfather Banka Bihari Das was a landlord. He was also a Pakwaj Badok. In addition, his family was involved in Indian congress party. His father, Binod Lal Das was parliament member of Assam parliament. Bidit Lal Das was the fifth among his brothers and sisters. He was taught by Ustad Pranesh Das, and later by Ustad Paresh Chakravarty in India.

Das composed folk songs such as "Shadher Lau Banailo Morey Boiragi", "Kare Dekhabo Moner Dukkho Go Ami Buk Chiria", "Sylhet Prothom Ajan Dhoni Babai Diachhey", "Pran Kande More Mon Kande Ray" and "Moriley Kandishna Amar Dai". His songs were performed by singers such as Hason Raja, Radharomon and Gias Uddin. He also worked as musical director on dance-dramas such as Siraj Uddoula, DwipantorTaposhi, ProdipshikhaBishorjon and Surmar bankey bankey.

Personal life and death

Das was married in 1968 to Kanak Rani Das. Their only son was Biswadip Lal Das. Das died of kidney and lung disease, aged 74, in Dhaka.[2][3][4]
