"Catallena" (Hangul: 까탈레나) is the third Korean single album, and sixth single overall by Orange Caramel, released 12 March 2014. The song samples from India's Punjabi wedding folk song Jutti Meri Jandiye and even features the original chanting line "Jutti Meri, Oye Hoi Hoi! Paula Mera, Oye Hoi Hoi!" as an important part of its chorus.[1]

Background

In late 2013, Pledis Entertainment announced that Orange Caramel would make their comeback in February of the next year.[2] The comeback was then delayed until the beginning of March.[3] The title and first teaser image were released on 18 February 2014.[4] A later teaser image revealed that the "Catallena" character was gagman Kim Daesung.[5]

Promotion

Promotions for "Catallena" began on 13 March 2014, following the release of the single, by the group holding their comeback stage on Mnet's M! Countdown. The group also performed on MBC's Music Core and MBC Music's Show Champion and SBS's Inkigayo on a weekly basis. It was revealed that the group would not be promoting on KBS's Music Bank due to conflicts between the broadcasting company and Orange Caramel's record label, Pledis Entertainment. On 21 March 2014 Orange Caramel performed on Music Bank, therefore ending the conflicts between KBS and Pledis Entertainment.

The group dressed as various food items during promotions, including sushi, french fries, and bibimbap.[6]

Music video

A 30-second music video teaser was revealed through Pledis Entertainment's official YouTube channel on 6 March 2014 and it has since gained over 600,000 views, highlighting the group's rising popularity.[7] Through the teaser, Orange Caramel revealed another bizarre concept showing them as various types of seafood. It also showcased the appearance of gagman Kim Daesung who is playing the role of "Catallena" in the music video. The full music video was unveiled on 12 March 2014 along with the release of the single. The song became instantly popular, gaining over 1 million views in 24 hours.
