Chi Pu (born Nguyễn Thùy Chi on June 14, 1993) is a Vietnamese actress, film producer, and band ambassador.

Biography

Chi Pu was born on June 14th, 1993 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Her father is a member of the Vietnamese military, and her mother is an English teacher. She has an older sister [1] who works in the banking industry. From a young age, Chi Pu was among the top students at her school. She played piano competed music competitions, winning first prize in the Hanoi Electronic Keyboard Festival In 2003.[2]

Chi Pu rose to fame in 2009 after reaching the top 20 contestants in Miss Teen Vietnam. Afterward, she joined the entertainment industry and became a teen idol.

Chi Pu is the first and the only Vietnamese artist with a self-titled mobile game, Chi Pu - VSao, which was released in 2015.[3]

According to Socialbaker, Chi Pu has the most followers of any Vietnamese actress on Facebook, Instagarm, and YouTube.[4]

Career

In 2013, Chi Pu started her acting career as the lead roles in the television dramas “Waterdrop” and Happy Dream which were broadcast on Vietnam National Television. That same year, she joined 5S Online, a popular television series in Vietnam with more than 1.3 billion views on Youtube.[5] Her role as "Princess Nana" in 5S Online was such a success that she was nicknamed after the character.

In 2013, Chi Pu to produced and acted in her first short film, Under One Sky.[6] The short film was highly rated among audiences and critics, receiving a Golden Kite Award--Vietnam's Oscar from the Vietnam Cinema Association--the following year.

At the end of 2013, Chi Pu appeared in her first full-length film in Thần tượng (Idol). The film won 6 Golden Kite Awards in the same year. Chi Pu also appeared in the horror movie Chung cư ma (Hush) and Hương Ga (Rise), which won Best Vietnamese Film at the 2016 San Francisco International New Concept Film Festival.

In 2014 Chi Pu was the leading role in the television dramaVẫn có em bên đời ("You’re always by my side"). The drama received high ratings, earning Chi Pu an HTV Award for The Most Favorite Television Drama Actress.[7] Chi Pu produced and acted in her second short movie called My Sunshine that same year. The movie received positive reviews and attracted millions of views on Youtube with its content and message supporting LGBT community.[8][9][10]

In 2015, Chi Pu marked a milestone in her acting career with her leading role in Yêu (Love) .[11] On the subject of LGBT, the movie won big in the box office and grossed more than half million USD in three days after releasing.[12][13][14][15] It also won the Golden Apricot Blossom Awards for Best Movie in 2015. Yêu won Chi Pu nominations for Best Actress at the 2015 Golden Apricot Blossom Awards and Green Star Awards that same year.

Chi Pu voiced the character Glim in the French animated movie MUNE: Guardian of the Moon, which won Best Movie at TIFF Kids International Film Festival.[16] Chi Pu took part in the musical “Thiên đài” (The Rooftop), an adaptation of the famous same-name musical movie by famous Taiwanese artist Jay Chou.[17] At the end of 2015, Chi Pu graduated from a short course in film production by Hollywood expert Dov Simens.

In 2016, Chi Pu produced her first web series Wake Up.[18] The 7-episode series was broadcast on V Live and Youtube. Chi Pu produced, co-wrote, starred, and sang the OST.[19] The budget for the series was about $150,000, paid for by Chi Pu and brand sponsorships.[20][21][22]

Besides Chi Pu, Wake Up has a main cast that includes some young talents such as Vân Anh (singer from The Voice Vietnam 2015), Lukas Công Dương. This series also marked the return of singer Quang Vinh - a male singer who owns many hits that are memorized by millions of Vietnamese. In addition, Wake Up has an impressive guest start cast such as Miss Vietnam Tourism 2008 Ngọc Diễm, Dancing with the stars kids Vietnam 2015 champion Linh Hoa, Youtube star Phở Đặc Biệt, actor B Trần, singer Gil Lê, Băng Di...[23]

In December 2016 Chi Pu will star in the comedy/action blockbuster Saigon Bodyguards, the first Vietnamese film by Japanese director Ken Ochiai. The movie was developed and produced by Hương Ga actor Kim Lý and Niv Fichman from Rhombus Media, an Oscar-winning producer.[24]

Fashion and Modeling

Chi Pu has been the muse of many famous fashion designers in Vietnam, namely Chung Thanh Phong and Lý Quí Khánh, who was honored as World Designer by Miss World 2015. She has also appeared on magazine covers such as ELLE Vietnam, Cosmopolitan Vietnam, STYLE, 2!, Vstyle. She also has also been featured in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, L’Officiel, Heritage Fashion, DEP.

From 2011 to 2013, Chi Pu was an icon among teenagers, but has since changed her image into a mature, elegant style. She also promotes her image with branded outfits and accessories. Some of her favorite brands include Chanel, Gucci, Dior, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, and Christian Louboutin.

In addition, she was invited as a VIP guest star in many big events and fashion shows. Chi Pu was the judge for several beauty and style competitions such as Miss Panasonic Beauty 2015[25] and Shine Your Style Contest[26] with L’Officiel Vietnam’s editorial secretary Angie Nguyễn and top-designer Lý Quí Khánh.

In 2015, Chi Pu was honored as Upcoming Female Actress at ELLE Style Awards 2015 by ELLE Vietnam. Vietnamese famous online newspaper Ngoisao.net also awarded Chi Pu Beauty Queen of 2015.[27]

Chi Pu partnered with TheBlueTshirt[28] and PUSW[29] to launch two fashion collections. The items in the collections were sold out in a short time and needed to be produced more to fulfill all the orders. Until now, Chi Pu is the first Vietnamese actress who partnered with a fashion brand to launch her own collection.

During Vietnam International Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2016, Chi Pu got herself into the spotlight by walking the catwalk for the very first time. She dressed in a trendy outfit and walked a poodle puppy to first face for the collection Emo in Love by designer Xuân Lê. The walk was voted as one of the most impressive moments at VIFW 2016.[30]

Music & Dancing

Although she stated that acting is her biggest passion, Chi Pu surprised the audience many times with her singing skills. She introduced several songs that have been popular and favorited, namely Fighting Fighting (Wake up OST),[31] Stay with me (LOVE OST),[32] Ngày bồng bềnh,[33] Tada X’mas (feat. Gil Lê). She also released some music videos of her songs for the audience.

Moreover, Chi Pu also awed people with her dancing skills. She earned the third place in Dancing with the stars Vietnam Season 6.[34] She also did dance covers for Dumb Dumb (Red Velvet) x Like Ooh Aah (TWICE) or Cheer Up (TWICE) that attracted millions of views on Youtube.

Host

Chi Pu also tried out as a host and impressed the audience.

In 2014, Chi Pu presented Vietnam media to go to Singapore and interview Guardians of the Galaxy’s in their premiere in Southeast Asia.[35]

In 2015, Chi Pu was the backstage host for Dancing with the stars kids Vietnam - Season 2.[36] In the same year, Chi Pu led the red carpet at musical event H’artistry and interviewed with The Voice UK coach Rita Ora and Korean boygroup Lucky J.[37]

In 2016, Chi Pu was one of the two hosts for The Voice Kids Vietnam - Season 4. She was applauded for her charming voice, her love for the young contestants, and her fashion style in each live-show.[38]

International activities

In October 2015, Chi Pu went to Malaysia to serve as a presenter at WebTV Asia Awards to honor great Asian content creators. She was the only Vietnamese representative who took part in the seminar on creative content on social networking platforms during this ceremony.

In July 2016, Chi Pu performed her song Fighting Fighting (Wake up OST) at Viral Fest Asia 2016 - a big musical event held in Bali, Indonesia. During this event, HyunA and many famous Asian artists also performed. Moreover, Chi Pu interviewed with Phoenix Radio Station, a top broadcasting station in Indonesia.[39]

In October 2016, Chi Pu was the first Vietnamese artist to be invited by Korean Daily News Hankoo Ilbo and V LIVE (Naver) for a tourism and beauty experience in Seoul. She met with Miss Korean runner-up Lee Sarah and famous beauty creators.[40] She had an interview with Korean Daily News Hankoo Ilbo and met with T-ara’s Jiyeon.[41]

In November 2016, Chi Pu was the only Vietnamese artist attending the first Asia Artist Awards in Seoul, Korea.[42]

Chi Pu have met many international celebrities such as The Voice UK and X-Factor UK coach Rita Ora, Korean band 2NE1, T-ara’s Jiyeon. She also worked with America’s Next Top Model 2015 winner Nyle DiMarco, Miss Korean 2014 runner-up Lee Sarah, Korean beauty creator Ssinim, Min Garden, the king of Malaysia box office Namewee

In an interview, Nyle DiMarco said Chi Pu was the most beautiful Vietnamese girl he has ever met, and he hoped to see her again soon.[43]

Charity

Chi Pu is very active at nonprofit and volunteer organizations. Recently using her reputation, Chi Pu urged people to contribute and support people who experienced floods in Central Vietnam. She also advocated funding heart surgeries for poor children. She held the event “Trung thu yêu thương” (Beloved Mid-Autumn) to perform art show and send out gifts for children at Center for Disabled Children in Ho Chi Minh City.[44]

In 2015, Chi Pu was one of the ambassadors for “Về đi Vàng ơi” (Come home Golden) campaign launched by Asia Canine Protection Alliance (ACPA). The campaign promoted to call for an end to the theft, trade, and cruel actions of dogs. Along with other artists, Chi Pu encouraged people to stop hunting and consuming rhino horns in Vietnam.[45]

Brand Endorsement

Because of her pure, non-scandal image and her influence on social networks, Chi Pu is a golden image that many big brands are eyeing. She used to work for innisfree, Pepsi, Heineken, Panasonic Beauty, Nestea, Cornetto... She is currently brand ambassador for Yamaha Janus,[56] Dove Vietnam, OPPO Cameraphone.

In June 2015, Chi Pu is the first and the only Vietnamese artist who has a mobile game named after her: Chi Pu – Vsao.

In April 2016, Chi Pu is the first Vietnamese artist to cooperate with Google in their Google App advertising campaign in Vietnam.[57]
