Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino is located just off of State Route 41 in Coarsegold, California, between Fresno and Yosemite National Park. It is owned and operated by the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians.[1]

The 56,000-square-foot (5,200 m2) casino has 1,800 slot machines, and 43 table games. Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino features a 370-seat buffet, Vintage Steakhouse, over 400 hotel rooms and suites, a full service spa and various other amenities.[2]

History

In June 2000, the Picayune Rancheria Tribe of Chukchansi Indians announced plans of constructing a resort casino close to Yosemite National Park. Construction was slated to begin in August 2000, but problems delayed groundbreaking.[3] In March 2002, the resort casino was approved by The National Indian Gaming Commission.[4] On October 29, 2002, groundbreaking for the Chuckchansi Gold Resort and Casino began. The forecast cost of the project was $150 million.[5]

The casino opened on June 25, 2003, while the resort opened on August 22, 2003.[6] In 2006, the casino bought the naming rights to Chukchansi Park in Fresno.

Closing and reopening

On October 9, 2014, a confrontation occurred when an armed tribal faction entered the casino. The casino was closed on the following day.[7]

The tribe brought in new casino leadership to revamp operations and reopen the casino. New Chief Operations officer Christian Goode,[8] negotiated with the NIGC and local officials in California, and reached a new deal with Unite Here! Local 19 on an agreement to guarantee good paying jobs and benefits for about 700 casino employees with annual wage increases.[9] The Tribe has also named Phil Hogen, former Chairman of the NIGC as Chairman of Chukchansi Tribal Gaming Commission and Joe Smith, former Director of Audits and Finance for NIGC as Commissioner of the Tribe’s Gaming Commission.[10]

The Casino reopened on December 31, 2015, and a formal Grand Reopening Ceremony took place on January 15, 2016.

Attractions

Initially, the Casino will reopen its doors with more than 56,000 square feet of gaming space featuring more than 1,700 reel and video slot machines and 22 table games, 220 hotel rooms and suites, a buffet, Vintage Steakhouse, bakery, a 24-hour light fare eatery, Deuces Diner, 3 Peaks center bar and Firehouse lounge that will feature live entertainment.

The casino has games for all patrons, from penny to high-limit machines, video poker and Keno to new games such as: Britney Spears, Batman, Sons of Anarchy, and Big Bang Theory. Besides Blackjack, the table game selection will boast of new table games like Mystery Card Roulette, while enthusiasts can enjoy Crazy 4 Poker, Pai Gow Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold'em, Spanish 21, Three Card Poker and Mini Baccarat.

When fully operational (after the mid-January grand reopening), Chukchansi will once again feature seven in-house restaurants that will offer patrons a wide array of Asian, American, and traditional comfort foods. The restaurants include the California Market Buffet, a 370-seat award-winning buffet with live action cooking stations; the 116 seat Goldfields Café, a traditional American diner with a gold miner theme; Noodle Bar; 3 Peaks Center Bar; and a Quick Serve Snack Bar. Vintage Steakhouse will feature steaks, seafood and wines. Nativo's will be an event space for groups or parties up to 75 people. The restaurants in total will have close to 700 seats and will have chefs including Michel Re.

Chukchansi's 200-seat entertainment venue, Firehouse Lounge, will also once again feature live music, comedy and sports entertainment.

For the hotel facility, the resort will reopen with 220 hotel rooms and suites in the 11-story Picayune Tower. Later in 2016, the Chukchansi Tower will re-open with almost another 200 rooms and suites. Guest rooms include sunrise and sunset views overlooking the valley and will have amenities including flat-screen plasma TVs, mini fridges, personal safes, high-speed Internet and much more.

The Casino resort also has other attractions including a full service spa, Serenity Springs Spa and Salon. The 13,000 square foot spa offers massages, pedicures, facials and hair styling. A fitness room will be available 24 hours and an indoor/outdoor heated pool and swim-up poolside bar. There are three conference rooms and an outdoor gazebo for events or meetings.[11][12]
