Cranston High School East, often called East, Cranston East, or abbreviated as CHSE, is a comprehensive high school located in the central part of Cranston, Rhode Island, with over 1,700 students in grades 9-12 and 150+ faculty members. The school mascot is the Thunderbolt, and its colors are green and white.

Cranston High School East is housed in two buildings, the main building at 899 Park Avenue and the William A. Briggs Building two doors down, which is where the school was originally housed. The Briggs building is home to the administrative offices of Cranston Public Schools, and also served as a Junior High School in the early part of the 20th century.

Cranston East was the first high school in Cranston; before Cranston West opened in 1958, the school was called simply Cranston High.

Facilities

In the late 19th century, Cranston High School was built and dedicated to William Briggs. In the 1920s a new section of the building (commonly referred to as "main") had been built because Briggs was too crowded at the time due to it being the only high school in the city. In 2007, the southeastern section of the building was rebuilt and added a few more (and much needed) classrooms in the area. It is commonly referred to as the "new wing."

Theatre

The Cranston East theatre department has been headed by Dr. Joseph Wallace since 1990. Under his direction the school won Rhode Island State Drama Festival in spring of 1992 with the play "The Serpent". Since then they have gone on to produce numerous shows and returned to Drama Festival in 2015 with the show "Emotion Baggage" for which they won an excellence in ensemble award. In 2016 once again they performed at Festival with "The Skriker". Currently the department has run into a lot of trouble mounting shows because their stage lights are broken.

Athletics

Cranston East is known for many championships in football, basketball, swimming, soccer and baseball. They are in Division I of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League in Football, Baseball, Volleyball, and Basketball and Division II for, soccer, and many others. Cranston East's Boys' Basketball team won back-to-back-to-back Championships in the now defunct Division I-A from 2002-2004.

During the 2010-2011 swim season, the Cranston East Boys' Swim Team won the Division II state title. In the 2011-2012 swim season, the East Boys once again won the Division II state title, going undefeated during the season. In the 2012-2013 season, the East boys once again won their division, going undefeated for the second straight season and winning their third straight Division II title.
