Dan K. Morhaim (born December 27, 1948), an American politician and physician, is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing northwest Baltimore County. He has been a leader in legislation concerning healthcare, the environment, and streamlining government operations. He is also the author of the book The Better End (2011), endorsed by Maya Angelou.

Background

Born in Los Angeles, California, United States, on December 27, 1948, Morhaim graduated from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970. Morhaim received his Doctor of Medicine from New York Medical College in 1975 and is board certified in internal and emergency medicine.[1] As of 2016, he has three children with wife, Shelley Morhaim,[2] and lives in Owings Mills, Maryland.[3]

Career

Morhaim has been a member of the Maryland House since 1995[1] and the Deputy Majority Leader since 2007.[3] He is a member of the Democrat Party and represents the 11th District, northwest Baltimore County. As of 2016, Morhaim serves as Chair of the Government Operations & Long-Term Care Subcommmittee and Co-Chair of the Fire/EMS Caucus.[1] He is the only physician in the Maryland General Assembly.[4]

A longtime writer, his book, The Better End: Surviving (and Dying) on Your Own Terms in Today's Modern Medical World, was published in 2011 by the Johns Hopkins University Press.[1] It was endorsed by Maya Angelou,[5] whom he had previously met in Paris, France, while "doing that American-writer-in-Paris thing," according to The Baltimore Sun.[6]

In addition to being in the state legislature, Morhaim is a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University of Maryland Medical School, as well as a staff physician at Sinai Hospital, Northwest Hospital, and Health Care for the Homeless in Baltimore and fire surgeon for Baltimore County. He is also a member of the board of directors for the John W. Brick Mental Health Foundation[7] and Health Care for the Homeless.[1][8]
