Datadog is a SaaS-based monitoring and analytics platform [3] for IT infrastructure, operations and development teams.[4] It brings together data from servers, databases, applications, tools and services to present a unified view of the applications that run at scale in the cloud.[5]

Technology

Datadog uses an open-source agent[6] written in Python for gathering metrics and events. Its backend is built using a number of open and closed source technologies including D3, Apache Cassandra, Kafka, PostgreSQL, etc.[7]

In 2014, Datadog support was broadened to multiple cloud service providers including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and Red Hat OpenShift. The company added OpenStack support as well.[8]

History

Datadog was founded in 2010[9] by Olivier Pomel, former VP of technology at Wireless Generation, and Alexis Lê-Quôc, former director of operations at Wireless Generation. Its monitoring daemon is a fork of the open source program 'agent'[10] originally created in 2009 by David Mytton[11] for Server Density (previously called Boxed Ice).

In November 2012, Datadog received a $6.2M Series A investment co-led by Index Ventures and RTP Ventures.[12]

In February 2014, Datadog raised $15M in a Series B funding round led by OpenView Venture Partners, and Dev Ittycheria, OpenView's managing director and former founder and CEO of BladeLogic (acquired by BMC), joined the company's board of directors.[13]

In January 2015, Datadog announced a $31M Series C investment led by existing investor Index Ventures, with participation from RTP Ventures, OpenView Venture Partners, Amplify Partners and more.[14] The $31M brings the total raised to $53.4M.[15]

In February 2015, Datadog acquired big data startup Mortar Data.[16] Datadog will integrate Mortar Data's big data analytics tools into its cloud management platforms, with the goal of helping customers more quickly pinpoint problems that may affect application performance.[17]

Datadog currently serves thousands of customers, comprising more than 100,000 servers,[18] in 42 countries[5] including Netflix, Spotify, EA, MercadoLibre[14] Lonely Planet, Facebook[19] Stanford University, Salesforce and the MLS soccer league.[2]
