Dave Edwards played at Andrew Jackson High School [2] At Jackson he averaged 41 points per game. [3] This was a New York City scoring record. [4] He played under legendary coach Chuck Granby. [4] He was considered to be one of the best players to ever come out of Queens. His stats led to debate as to whether or not he was better than future NBA player Kenny Anderson. [3] Dave played streetball at Rucker Park and was known to wow the crowd. [3]

Edwards played initially at Georgetown University, where he averaged 5.4 points per game. [2] He experienced disagreements with coach John Thompson and transferred. [3] This disagreement was based on Georgetown focusing on big men such as Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mtumbo. [5] As a result, he played only one season at Georgetown. [5] Dave Edwards eventually moved on to play at Texas A&M, where he led the team in steals and averaged 13 points per game. [1] He also averaged 5.6 rebounds and 8.8 assists. [1] During his senior season at Texas, he was a candidate for the Francis Pomeroy Naismith, given to the best senior in the country under 6-feet tall. . He was runner up for this award.[5]

His father, Dave Edwards was a 4 year player [7] and a 3 year captain at Virginia Commonwealth University. [5] His son Corey Edwards is a known basketball player. [3] His son plays at George Mason University. [5]
