Elizabeth M. Ward is an American scientist and researcher for the American Cancer Society. She has been the National Vice President of Intramural Research since 2012[1] and has been listed in the Thomson Reuters list of highly cited scientists.[2]
Education
Ward received her PhD in epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania and then worked for 21 years at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).[1]
Career
In 1995, Ward was appointed Chief of the Studies and Surveillance Branch of NIOSH[3] until her 2002 retirement. That same year, she was awarded with a US Public Health Service Meritorious Service Medal.[1] After the 9/11 attacks, Ward advocated a pro-active stance from the government on testing for cancer of relief workers, given the unique circumstances that existed and the large exposure to unknown hazards.[4]
Ward joined the American Cancer Society in 2002 as director of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Research Department[1] and began serving on the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries' (NAACCR) National Coordinating Council committee for Cancer Surveillance as co-chair in 2004. The following year, she was promoted to committee chair. In 2012, she received the Dr. Calum S. Muir Award in recognition of her long-term contributions.[5]
