Elly Deliou

Elli Deliou (1936 April 12, 2012)[1] (Έλλη Δέλιου, also Elly Deliou) was a Greek musician. Her instrument was the musical saw".[2]

Deliou was born in Alexandria, Egypt, the daughter of industrialist Konstantinou Deliou. She started to learn "sawing" at 7 years old with Polish-Austrian Anton Stein. She the piano from age 5 and also composed music (she was awarded 2 times by Gina Bachaouer). She studied at the Industrial School of Alexandria. She came to Greece in 1956, working as a professional musician (playing the saw and singing in different centers) in 1969, when her father died. Her father didn't want her to work as a musician. In 1985 she bought the last specially made "musical saw" that existed in Greece from the music house "Gaitanos".

The musical saw is played with a violin bow that is grated on a strong metal plate held between the knees.
