Farouk Miya (born 26 November 1995) is an Ugandan football player who plays as a striker for Belgian club Standard Liège on a three-year deal and the Uganda national football team. Standard Liège has already confirmed that they have used the buy option to make the deal permanent as of the 2016-17 season. Miya is described as "Muyizi Tasubwa", a Luganda saying meaning "a hunter who cannot miss".

Career statistics

Club career

Miya started playing for Vipers midway through the 2013-14 season. In 49 league appearances, he netted an impressive 20 goals, leading his team to the top of the table in the 2014-15 season.

In January 2016, it was announced that Miya would be joining Belgian top flight club, Standard Liège[2] in what is reported to be an initial loan deal taking him from Ugandan club Vipers.[3] Standard Liège acquired his services for a fee worth $400,000.[4] Miya made his first appearance on 13 March 2016 as a substitute for Darwin Andrade in a 0–4 loss against KV Mechelen, where he was booked for a yellow card in the 77th minute.

International career

Miya was called up to the Uganda U23 team for the 2015 African Games. In the first round against Mozambique U23, he missed several scoring opportunities and both legs ended 0–0. Miya's penalty was stopped by Mozambican goalkeeper Cesar Machava as his team eventually lost 1–4 in penalties. He played for the U23 team once again for the 2015 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualification. In the second round against Rwanda U23, Miya scored a goal in each leg, booking his team a ticket to the third round against Egypt U23. Although he did find the net once more, Uganda U23 was ousted from the tournament by a 1-6 defeat on aggregate.

His goals as he led the home based Cranes into the CHAN competition have risen him to fame, making manager Milutin Sredojević confident enough to include him for the national team. He proved his worth by scoring in CHAN qualifiers and securing his spot in the senior squad. He brought delight to Ugandans as he scored three goals in two games against Togo in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. In the 2015 CECAFA Cup he scored a brace in the second leg against Zanzibar and had a superb finish just five minutes into the game against Malawi to carry Uganda into the semi-finals. He was both team captain and striker and indeed he made it clear with the deciding spot kick after extra time against Ethiopia, booking the Uganda Cranes a final spot against Rwanda. On 4 September 2016, Miya continued to bring a smile to the lips of Ugandans as he stopped the 38 year old Africa Cup of Nations qualification drought since 1978 with a far fetched goal in the 37th minute in the match against Comoros. Uganda finished second behind Burkina Faso in group D, both with 13 points and 4 goal difference but the latter were better on the head to head record.
