Frog Commissary is a restaurant in Philadelphia, founded by Steve Poses in 1976.[1] The restaurant has since catered more than 15,000 events.[1] The company has had many iterations; today it is the in-house caterer of the Franklin Institute.

History

Frog Commissary is the natural offspring of Poses’ first restaurant, Frog, which the restaurateur opened in 1973, and The Commissary, which he inaugurated a few years later. The restaurant was one of the first local eateries to list its offerings on a blackboard, and it offered an upscale menu. It was cited by Philadelphia Magazine as the “Best Restaurant” of the past 25 years.[1] In 1977, Poses opened The Commissary, a diner/cafeteria/piano bar/restaurant that was open all day. While the Frog offered more expensive options, the atmosphere at The Commissary had a laid back feel.

Steve Poses

Steve Poses, the company’s founder, was born in Yonkers, New York. He attended college at the University of Pennsylvania after which he decided to open his first restaurant in Philly. Frog, located at the intersection of 16th and Spruce, was a “fusion” restaurant before the word was part of the culinary lexicon. Its cuisine combines Asian and European cuisines. Poses earning a coveted spot in the 50 Who’s Who of Cooking in America. Poses launched Frog Commissary Catering, which is a follow-up to the two restaurants. In addition, he has authored two bestselling cooking primers: Frog Commissary Cookbook[2][3] and At Home by Steve Poses: A Caterer’s Guide to Cooking and Home Entertaining.[4]

Catering

The catering company is privately held and co-owned by founder Steve Poses and his wife, CEO Christina Sterner.[5] The catering firm has a staff of more than 200 and it is the in-house caterer for The Franklin Institute. It also caters events off site.[6]

Steve Poses along with Anne Clark and Becky Roller, published The Frog Commissary Cookbook in 1985.[2][3] Over 100,000 copies have been sold.
