Glen Charles Rea (born 3 September 1994) is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a central defender or midfielder for League Two club Luton Town and the Republic of Ireland national under-21 team.

Club career

Brighton & Hove Albion

Born in Brighton, East Sussex,[2] Rea started his career at Brighton & Hove Albion, joining the club's academy and progressing through the youth system, earning a professional contract after completing his two-year scholarship.[3] In February 2015, Rea signed a contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2016.[4]

Ahead of the 2015–16 season, Rea was given squad number 26,[5] before making his professional debut for Brighton one week later in a 1–0 away win over Southend United in the League Cup first round, with Rea playing for the full 90 minutes.[6] Following the expiration of his loan spells at Southend United and Luton Town, Rea faced an uncertain future, as he was yet to be offered a new contract.[7] However, Southend United and Luton Town both expressed an interest in signing him on a permanent basis, but would need to pay a compensation fee.[8][9]

Southend United (loan)

On 27 August 2015, two weeks after the fixture, Southend manager Phil Brown expressed an interest in signing Rea on loan,[10] claiming later that day the club were close to signing him.[11] The next day, Brighton confirmed Rea had joined Southend on loan until 2 January 2016.[12] Rea made his Southend debut against Coventry City on 31 August 2015 in a 2–2 draw.[13] He made a total of 16 appearances for Southend in all competitions,[14] the last of which was a 3–0 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers on 2 January 2016,[15] before returning to Brighton thereafter.[16]

Luton Town

On 17 March 2016, Rea signed for League Two club Luton Town on loan until the end of the 2015–16 season, linking back up with Luton manager Nathan Jones who had previously been his first-team coach at Brighton.[17] He made his Luton debut in a 1–0 away win over Plymouth Argyle two days later.[18][19] Rea featured in every game, making 10 league appearances for the club during his loan spell.[14]

Rea signed a permanent two-year contract with Luton for an undisclosed fee on 27 June 2016.[20] He scored his first professional goal in a 2–1 home defeat to Grimsby Town on 10 September 2016.[21]

International career

Rea, who was born in England, is eligible to play for Republic of Ireland and was called up by Republic of Ireland U21 on 13 November 2014.[22]

Rea's Republic of Ireland U21 debut came on 15 November 2014 against United States U21, in a game which the Republic of Ireland lost 1–0, with Rea playing the match in midfield.[23] Rea scored his first goal for the Republic of Ireland U21 during his second appearance three days later, in a 2–2 draw with Russia U21.[24]
