Grimes Field (FAA LID: I74) is a city-owned public-use airport located one nautical mile (1.85 km) north of the central business district of Urbana, a city in Champaign County, Ohio, United States.[1] Named for Warren G. Grimes, it is also known as Urbana Municipal Airport and it serves general aviation traffic.[2] Although it is owned by the City of Urbana, Grimes Field is self-supporting. It receives no money from the general fund, instead relying on raising its own money via Hangar Rental, Fuel Sales and Farm Land Rental for operating.

The airport is home to the Champaign Aviation Museum.[3] It also houses a project to rebuild a World War II era B-17 Heavy Bomber called the Champaign Lady. The B-17 Project website shows the progress and has a couple live web cameras in the hangar where the aircraft is being restored. Volunteers work on it Tuesday through Saturday.[4] As of 1 July 2016, the airport manager was Elton Cultice.

Facilities and aircraft

Grimes Field covers an area of 329 acres (133 ha) at an elevation of 1,068 feet (326 m) above mean sea level. It has two runways. One runway, designated 2/20 with an asphalt surface measuring 4,400 by 100 feet (1,341 x 30 m).and a second runway, designated 1/19 with a grass surface measuring 3000 by 100 feet (914 x 30m)[1]

For the 12-month period ending May 21, 2013, the airport had 23,360 aircraft operations, an average of 64 per day: 51% transient, 51% local, 2% military and 2% air taxi. At that time there were 55 aircraft based at this airport: 39 single-engine, 11 multi-engine, 1 helicopter and 4 ultralight.[1]
