Helen Giuliani (née D'Avanzo; September 26, 1909 – September 8 2002) was the mother of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.[2]

Early life

Helen Giuliani (née D'Avanzo) was born in Brooklyn, on Sept. 26, 1909, to Luigi (Louis) and Adelena D'Avanzo.[3] Her father, a barber who had emigrated from Avellino Italy,[3] died in 1925, leaving her mother to raise her and her six siblings. Helen and her siblings were raised Roman Catholic.[3]

She met Harold Giuliani, a plumber and bartender, at a party in 1929 or 1930;[3] They married in 1936, and had one child: Rudy Giuliani, in 1944. The family lived in East Flatbush, Brooklyn until Harold died of prostate cancer in 1981,[4] after which time Helen moved to Manhattan's Upper East Side.

She was featured in a television commercial to promote her son in the 1993 Mayoral Election.[4]
