Hem Chandra Dasgupta

Hem Chandra Dasgupta was an Indian geologist, who died in 1933.

Life

Hem Chandra Dasgupta graduated and post-graduated (in 1900) from Presidency College, Calcutta. He was a faculty member of the Presidency College geology department from 1903 to 1933. He was the first Indian full-time teacher. He was head of department at both Presidency College[1] and Calcutta University.

Professor Dasgupta initiated and actively encouraged researches in geology. He himself contributed in different branches of the subject, particularly paleontology and the stratigraphy of different parts of India. He was a Foundation Fellow and the first Honorary Joint Secretary of the Geological Mining and Metallurgical Society of India (GMMSI).
