History

Hopper is a mobile application that uses big data to predict and analyze airfare. Hopper provides travelers with the information they need to get the best deals on flights, and notifies them when prices for their flights are at their predicted lowest points. [1]

The company is currently headquartered in Montreal, Canada, and also maintains an office in Cambridge, Massachusetts. [2]

Funding

In 2008, the company secured $2 million in funding. In 2011, a second round of funding secured $8 million from Accomplice and Brightspark Ventures.[3] The next year, Hopper secured $12 million from OMERS Ventures.[4]

Total funding to date is $38 million from BDC Capital IT Venture Fund, OMERS Ventures, Accomplice (formerly Atlas Venture) and Brightspark Ventures. [5]

Hack/reduce

In May 2012, Hopper CEO Frédéric Lalonde and entrepreneur Christopher P. Lynch founded Hack/reduce, a non-profit hacker space designed to attract and foster big-data talent in the Boston area.[6] Hack/reduce, which is located in the same building as Hopper's offices, has partnered with MIT, CSAIL, and Harvard,[7] and has received a grant from Governor Deval Patrick as part of his Massachusetts Big Data Initiative.[8]
