"Hot Sugar" is a song by American singer Tamar Braxton from her second studio album, Love and War (2013). The song was released on October 17, 2013, as the fourth and final singe from the album. American producer Kyle "K2" Stewart II wrote "Hot Sugar" in collaboration with Braxton and songwriters LaShawn Daniels and Mandakeba Riddick.

Critical response to "Hot Sugar" was mixed: some critics praised its sound while others negatively compared it to the album's ballads.

Background

In an interview with Essence, Braxton said she originally pushed for "Hot Sugar" to be the first single from Love and War. She explained the decision to release the song "Love and War" instead was due to its connection to her marriage.[1]

Critical reception

"Hot Sugar" received mixed responses from music critics. Artistdirect's Rick Florino praised the single as "smoothly sexy" and fun.[2] Andy Kellman of AllMusic called the song "mind-numbing" and wrote that it was "no match for the fully formed songs that seemed rooted in Braxton's life experiences".[3] Shehnaz Khan of Yahoo! News criticized it along with the album's other up-tempo tracks for "ruin[ing] the dynamic of the album" and clashing with the ballads. Khan described the single as "debatably skip worthy".[4]

Commercial reception

"Hot Sugar" debuted at number 44 on Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs on September 21, 2013.[5] "Hot Sugar" also peaked at number 48 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, number 6 on Billboard R&B Streaming Songs chart and number 6 on Hot R&B Songs chart on November 2, 2013.[6][7][8]
