The inauguration of Martin Van Buren as the eighth President of the United States took place on Saturday, March 4, 1837. The inauguration marked the commencement of the only four-year term of Martin Van Buren as President and Richard Mentor Johnson as Vice President. Van Buren was sworn in as President by Chief Justice Roger Taney on March 4, a sunny and cold day. For the first time in inaugural history, the outgoing President (Andrew Jackson) and incoming President rode together to the Capitol.[1]
