Italy was represented by Iva Zanicchi, with the song '"Due grosse lacrime bianche", at the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 29 March in Madrid. For the third consecutive year, Italian broadcaster RAI chose one of the winning singers from that year's Sanremo Music Festival as their performer but with a different song from that with which they had won the festival.
At Eurovision
On the night of the contest Zanicchi performed third in the running order, following Ireland and preceding the United Kingdom. The song was the only traditional-style big dramatic ballad in a contest very heavily weighted towards uptempo pop entries. At the close of voting "Due grosse lacrime bianche" had received 5 points (all single-point votes from Finland, Ireland, Monaco, Portugal and Yugoslavia), placing Italy joint 13th (with Yugoslavia) of the 16 entries. The Italian jury divided their 10 points between only three countries – 4 to Monaco and 3 each to the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.[1]
