Jack Chambers (born 10 October 1988) is a dancer, singer, actor and choreographer, from Brisbane, Australia. He is best known for winning the first season of So You Think You Can Dance Australia in 2008.
Early life
Chambers started dance lessons at Brisbane's Julie-Ann Lucas School of Dance at the age of three and continued there until he was 17. He combined this training with acting and singing studies.
Career
Chambers career took off at the age of 10 when he was cast in his first professional musical, the stage production of The Sound of Music, playing Kurt Von Trapp at the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane.[1] He then ventured into video and television and was cast in a role for Japanese Children's Television. Prior to his professional work in theatre, he was part of the amateur theatre community in Brisbane from the age of ten, working with companies such as Ocean Theatre Company, Queensland Musical Theatre and Harvest Rain Theatre Company.
In 2005, he collaborated with a friend within Harvest Rain Theatre Company, and devised an abstract production called Big Black Box,[2] which earned him the "Young Star Award".[3] From the age of 15, Chambers started performing with the male tap group Raw Metal which years later became family dance company, Raw Dance Company. In 2007 he choreographed and performed in Raw Dance Company's Production Project X at the Holland Dance Festival in Den Haag and The Singapore Arts Festival.
Chambers was crowned the first So You Think You Can Dance Australia winner in 2008.
After winning So You Think You Can Dance, Chambers moved to New York City. Recent achievements there include working as a choreographer and teacher at the Joffrey Ballet School and PeriDance Center, winning the "Young Choreographer" Award at the American Dance Awards in New Jersey, as well as appearing in a number of theatre productions including Kennedy Center's 'Spring Gala 2010' alongside Liza Minnelli and Ben Vereen, and 'Katy Bridgewater' at Alvin Ailey Theatre.
After teaching dance and performing throughout the United States for 18 months, Chambers was contacted by Australian producers to return to Australia and star as the teen heartthrob, Link Larkin, in a touring production of Hairspray.[4]
