Detective Sergeant Jack Christey (John Edward Christey, born 10 September 1954) was a fictional character from the police series Water Rats. He was portrayed by Steve Bisley. He was on the show as a guest star in 1998, and then as a main star in 1999 to the end in 2001.

Character biography

Jack first appeared on the show as a Detective Senior Constable in season three, but was promoted to Detective Sergeant upon replacing Frank Holloway (Colin Friels) in season four. He was originally a detective at the Balmain patrol.

In season three, Jack met Rachel Goldstein (Catherine McClements) when he worked at the Water Police as a temporary replacement for Frank. He liked Rachel straight away, but the same could not be said for her initially.[1] They later slept together when Jack replaced Frank for two weeks.[2]

In season four, Jack came back to the Water Police to fill the void Frank had left, and was partnered with Rachel and newcomer Michael Reilly (Aaron Pedersen). He was a little annoyed at Rachel at first, for not returning his phone calls, but it was obvious that he still had a soft spot for her.[3] Later in the season, he and Rachel were kidnapped and came close to dying.[4] It was because of this that they began their relationship again, and it lasted until Rachel was stabbed and died in Jack's arms.[5] Jack told Rachel that he loved her, and only found out that she felt the same way about him after reading her diary.[6]

In season five, Jack found out he had an 18-year-old daughter, Sophie, from relationship that ended long ago.[7]

In season six, Jack became Acting Chief Inspector when Jeff took time off work, and in the final episode of Water Rats, Jack was shot and left floating in the harbour.[8] Although it is not known for sure what happened to him after that, he probably died as Steve Bisley was not returning if the series continued after 2001.
