The band relocated from Siloam Springs, Arkansas to Nashville, Tennessee in 2005 to pursue careers as full-time musicians. The band signed with Word Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros., in 2005.

Jackson Waters released their first single, "Give Me Amazing Grace" on October 20, 2006. Debut album Come Undone was released nationally on February 27, 2007. Independent release Supply was released nationally on October 14, 2008.

The group has had two of their original songs featured on the CW network show One Tree Hill. "Center of Attention" was in a November 2006 episode and "Come Undone" was played in the season 5 premiere on January 5, 2008.

On February 18, 2009, the band announced that it was "going to take a break indefinitely".[1]

On March 26, 2009, lead singer David Leonard was announced as the newest (touring) member of NEEDTOBREATHE. He joined their live touring band on keys and backing vocals.[2] In 2010, David went on to start the duo All Sons and Daughters (originally Sons and Daughters) with Leslie Jordan.[3] Nate Hufford is currently playing drums for the group Brenn, Seth Talley is currently producing projects and just released his first solo EP. Toby Friesen replaced David Leonard as NEEDTOBREATHE's touring auxiliary musician in May 2010 when David left the group to pursue All Sons and Daughters. In August 2011 Toby joined Jeremy Camp's band, a popular Christian pop/rock artist as his lead guitar player.
