Janak Palta McGilligan is an Indian social worker and the founding trustee and vice chairperson of Jimmy McGilligan Centre For Sustainable Development, an Indore based non governmental organization working for sustainable community development.[1] She is also a former director of Barli Development Institute for Rural Women.,[1][2]

History

Janak Palta was born in a Punjabi family of Bibi Nanki Devi'ji Palta family and grew up in Chandigarh.[3] She secured a master's degree (MA) in English literature,Political Science, Sangeet Visharad In Sitar, an MPhil in Political Science with distinction, and a doctoral degree (PhD) in" Sustainable Community Development through Training of Tribal and Rural Women a Human Resources"[4] during and after which she worked at various places such as the Provident Fund office, at the High Court and at the Centre for Rural and Industrial Development.[3] She married James(Jimmy )McGilligan, an Irishman and they served and Developed Barli Development Institute for Rural Women as Baha'i pioneers.[3] Janak Palta served as the director of the institution from the day of its establishment 1 June 1985 till she took retirement on 16 April 2011 . Just after that she has been serving as a Director "Jimmy McGilligan Centre For Sustainable Development " /> She is Member Management Board of Chitrakoot University,Chitrakoot. associated with UNICEF as resource person for the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCID)[4] and has also authored a book on Barli Development Institute for Rural Women.[5]• She Envisioned and Developed after fully testing, 8 specially Designed Curriculum Books, out of which 7 are published, mostly Macmillan Publishers: (All these Books are published in the name of the Institute by her choice) List of Books& subjects covered: 1 .Health -Hindi Medium 2005 2. Health - Marathi Medium 2007 4 .Cutting & Tailoring, Hindi Medium 2007 ( based on National Instittute of Open Schooling Curriculum New Delhi ) 5 Hindi Literacy- 2009 6 Batik Printng -Hindi Medium 2010 7 Vijalo,theme song book 2010 : A collection of 100 folk Songs with theme based on Development in indigenous dialects along with Hindi Translation. 8 Learning to Develop Myself and My Community in Hindi (unpublished).

Janak Palta McGilligan, a recipient of Manav Seva Award, Sadbhavana Samman and Paryavaran Mitra Puraskar,[4] was honoured by the Government of India in 2015 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.[6]
