Jean Baptiste Louis DeCourtel Marchand
Jean Baptiste Louis DeCourtel Marchand (died 1722 in Wetumpka, Alabama) was a French soldier. Little is known about Captain Marchands' early life. It is known that Jean was the French military commanding officer of the colonial trading post Fort Toulouse, near present-day Wetumpka, Alabama. Sometime in 1722, he was murdered by his own men in a mutiny who had apparently become fed up and frustrated over shortages of food, supplies, and pay.
In 1720, he married Sehoy of the prestigious Wind Clan of the Creek Nation. Their children were:
- Sehoy II (April 1722 - 1799). She was the grandmother of William Weatherford.
- Chief Red Shoes (died 1783/84). He was the uncle of Alexander McGillivray.
