John McGrath (born 28 July 1994) is an Irish hurler who plays as a right corner-forward for the Tipperary senior team.
Born in Loughmore, County Tipperary, McGrath was introduced to hurling in his youth. He played in the Harty Cup with Our Lady's Secondary School, Templemore while simultaneously coming to prominence at underage levels with the Loughmore-Castleiney club. McGrath is three-time championship medal winner as a dual player.
McGrath made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of fifteen when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor teams as a dual player. An All-Ireland medal winner in both codes in this grade, he was later an All-Ireland runner-up with the under-21 footballers. McGrath made his senior debut during the 2015 league. He has since gone on to become a regular member of the starting fifteen and has won one Munster medal.
McGrath's brother, Noel, is an All-Ireland medal winner with Tipperary.
Career
McGrath played Minor Hurling for Tipperary from 2010 to 2012, winning an All Ireland in 2012. McGrath was named in the Tipperary squad for the 2015 National Hurling League and made his league debut on 22 February against Galway starting at corner forward and scoring two points in a 2-18 to 0-20 win in Semple Stadium.[1][2]
McGrath made his Championship debut on 22 May, 2016 against Cork in the Munster Championship quarter-final win, starting at left corner forward in a 0-22 to 0-13 win where he scored a point.[3][4] On 10 July, 2016, McGrath scored 3-2 in the 2016 Munster Hurling Final win against Waterford. [5] He followed up his performance in the Munster final by scoring 1-1 against Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final on 14 August at Croke Park.[6]
On 4 September 2016, McGrath scored 1-3 as he won his first All-Ireland Senior hurling title when Tipperary defeated Kilkenny in the final by 2-29 to 2-20. His brother Noel also played alongside home in the match.[7][8][9]
