John Rattray
John Rattray is a Scottish professional skateboarder.
Early life
Rattray was raised in Aberdeen[1] and attained a university degree from the University of Glasgow.[2]
Professional skateboarding
In 2001, Rattray initially turned professional for the British company Blueprint Skateboards and later signed with American company Zero Skateboards, prior to a relocation to the United States (US).
During his professional career Rattray has been sponsored by Circa Footwear, the now defunct Savier (with whom he had his first signature model), Osiris shoes, and éS shoes, with whom he had a signature shoe that features the Saltire. Following the announcement of a hiatus for the éS company, Rattray has not attained another shoe sponsor. Rattray explained the cessation of his contract with éS in a May 2013 interview:
I rode for éS and look how amazingly well that worked out; pro careers plonked on the chopping block by some teddy-baker-shirt-wearing financial consultant with an MBA. That is what skater owned is. I don't even mean it's bad or wrong I just mean that it doesn't make a blind bit of difference because business, inside spreadsheets that will self-destruct if they don't provide a sensible return, is just business and it makes no difference if you skate, or you're some dude who used to skate, or you don't know the difference between a fingerboard and a Bridgebolt.[3]
Rattray appeared in the console video games Skate,[4] Skate 2, and Skate 3.
Other projects
Rattray runs a blog entitled "The Predatory Bird" that was launched in late 2010 while he was recovering from a skateboard-related injury.[5] He became Team Manager of the New Balance skate team, New Balance Numeric (NB#), in early 2013. Rattray explained in a March 2013 interview, why he was not a member of the NB# skate team: "I'm old and haggard and need a zimmer frame to move around so..."[3]
