Katherine Kelley is an American educator and beauty pageant titleholder from Madisonville, Kentucky, who was crowned Miss Nevada 2015. She competed for the Miss America 2016 title in September 2015. Kelley teaches geometry at Mojave High School in Clark County, Nevada.

Pageant career

Early pageants

In August 2009, while a student at Madisonville North Hopkins High School in her home state of Kentucky, Kelley won the Hopkins County Junior Miss crown.[1] She placed in the top 10 at state in a field of 34 contestants. [2]As an undergraduate at the University of Alabama, Kelley continued entering local pageants, vying for a chance at Miss Alabama.[3][4] She placed first runner-up in the Miss Corolla pageant[5] and third runner-up to Miss University of Alabama 2012.[6]

Miss Nevada 2015

Kelley enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Fall 2014 to being work on a master's degree.[7][8] On February 7, 2015, Kelley was crowned Miss Summerlin 2015 which made her eligible to compete at the 2015 Miss Nevada pageant.[9] The state pageant was held June 26–27, 2015, in Reynolds Hall at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Las Vegas.[8][10] Entering as one of 14 qualifiers, Kelley's competition talent was a classical piano performance.[11] Her platform is "Every Day Counts: Improving Public School Attendance".[8]

Kelley won the competition on Saturday, June 27, 2015, when she received her crown from outgoing Miss Nevada titleholder Ellie Smith.[11][12] She earned several thousand dollars in scholarship money from the state pageant. Kelley was also named winner of the Outstanding Academic Achievement award and Lifestyle in Swimsuit award.[11] As Miss Nevada, her activities include public appearances across the state of Nevada.[13]

Vying for Miss America 2016

Kelley was Nevada's representative at the Miss America 2016 pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in September 2015.[11][14] In the televised finale on September 13, 2015, she placed outside the Top 15 semi-finalists and was eliminated from competition. She was awarded a $3,000 scholarship prize as her state's representative.[15][16]

Early life and education

Kelley is a native of Madisonville, Kentucky.[3][8][13] She is a 2010 graduate of Madisonville North Hopkins High School.[17][18] In 2009 she was a cast member of the Community Theater production of "Brighton Beach Memoirs".[19]

In 2014, Kelley graduated from the University of Alabama where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations.[9] While a student at Alabama, Kelley became a member of the Alpha Chi Omega women's fraternity.[20] In June 2012, between her sophomore and junior years at Alabama, Kelley interned in the Washington, D.C., offices of Ed Whitfield, the U.S. Representative for Kentucky's 1st congressional district.[18]

Kelley is enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas working to earn a master's degree in secondary mathematics education.[8] She teaches geometry at Mojave High School in North Las Vegas for the Clark County School District as a member of Teach for America and AmeriCorps.[9][21]
