The Kharkiv State School of Art (Ukrainian: Харківське державне художнє училище) is an educational institution in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Its subjects include painting, sculpture, design and decoration.
History
Opened in 1912, the Kharkiv Art School was established on the basis of the City Art School, the private art school of Rayevska-Ivanova. A fresh spirit of teaching was introduced in a modernist style, where artists worked together with students. It started its specialized work in a new room which was built in the modern style, but with an influence of the old construction built by K. Zhukov. The first principal of the new school was Alexandr Liubimov, the student of Ilya Repin. The school teachers were alumni of Repin's workshop at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg.
The Art School had four general classes: elementary drawing gipsogolovnoy and masks, fashioned and full-scale. There were also two special classes - painting (mёrtvonaturny, head, full-scale) and special subjects (anatomy, perspective, order, primary drawing). There were also classes in general subjects. From 1913 the school was managed by S. Prohorov, who had been the principal of the Art School in Tomsk, Russia. From 1914 the school was headed by G. Gorelov, and from 1916 by Aleksey Kokel. A faculty of architecture was added 1925. [1]
