Muay Thai career

Taking the ring name "Newlukrak Pagonponsurin" (นิวลูกรัก ปกรณ์พรสุรินทร์) or "Newlukrak Sor Kattika" (นิวลูกรัก ส.กัตติกา),[1] he won the titles at Rajadmnern, Lumpini and the Thai national championships in amateur boxing.[2]

Professional boxing career

Sponsored by Thai convenience store chain CP Freshmart (in a network of Charoen Pokphand),[3] he won the vacant WBC Youth World mini-flyweight title in his professional debut on June 22, 2012, defeating Marzon Cabilla by a sixth-round technical decision.[4] He successfully made seven consecutive title defenses before vacating the title.

Niyomtrong then defeated Carlos Buitrago by a twelfth-round unanimous decision to win the vacant interim WBA Minimumweight title on October 1, 2014. After defending his title for a third time, the WBA ordered a match-up between Niyomtrong and WBA world minimumweight champion Byron Rojas on June 29, 2016.[5]
