Lake Indawarra
Lake Indawarra is an artificial lake located in the town of Tintinara in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. The lake was created by railroad workers in 1905 and was given its name in the 1980s. It was once an important part of Tintinara and children would go there to swim and canoe.
Etymology
The lake was named after a small competition was held by the local council whereby the local student body of Tintinara chose the name.[1] Unlike the town name, Indawarra is a made-up variation of local aboriginal words.
Pollution and cleanup
In the early 1990s the lake started to become polluted. People were dumping their rubbish in it, the water became polluted and unhealthy, and the wildlife began to leave.
In 2007, students from the Tintinara Area School decided to get the lake up and going again. They planted trees and built picnic spots on one day a week. They built a small island in the middle of the lake and named it "Bird Island". In 2011, there was a definite improvement at the lake with wildlife, such as birds, coming back.[2]
