Liron Shapira (born 1987) is an Israeli American businessman and technology entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and chief science officer of search startup Quixey.[4][5]

Early life

Shapira was born in Israel, but moved to Silicon Valley with his family at age four.[2] In 2009, he graduated with a degree in computer science from University of California, Berkeley. Before starting Quixey or graduating college, he was the first engineer on the team at Slide.com that created SuperPoke! Pets.[3][6]

Quixey

In 2009, Shapira co-founded Quixey, a "search engine for apps", with Chief Strategy Officer Tomer Kagan. At the time, Quixey was the "first entrant" in a "market that didn't exist",[7] but is now valued at around $600 million as of 2015.[8] Shapira leads research at Quixey to build "functional search" technology,[2] and created Quixey's all-platform search with natural language processing.[9] He has helped developers integrate mobile deep linking into their apps.[10]

Shapira was also responsible for developing the "Quixey Challenge", where contestants were each paid $100 for identifying a simple software bug in under sixty seconds. Quixey used the challenge as a recruiting tool for software engineers, and winners were invited to interview with the company, resulting in several hires.[11][12]

Activities

Shapira is an advisor to the Machine Intelligence Research Institute and the Center for Applied Rationality, two not-for-profit research groups.[4] He predicts a future where the Internet of Things evolves into an "internet of everything".[13]
