Llorente & Cuenca (founded in 1995) is a Spanish consulting firm, specializing in communications, reputation management and public affairs.[1] It has offices in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Portugal and Dominican Republic, and offers its services through affiliates in the United States, Bolivia, Uruguay, Venezuela and Paraguay.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

History

The company was founded in 1995 by José Antonio Llorente and Olga Cuenca, taking their business name from the combination of the surnames of both founders. In 1998 the firm opened its first offices in Latin America, a subsidiary in Lima, Peru.[8]

In 2006 the firm developed a partnership with AMO. The following year, they opened a regional office in Mexico. Later, they expanded to the United States, focusing on American businesses working in Latin America. The US affiliate of Llorente in 2009 was EDF Communications.[9] In 2008 Llorente & Cuenca entered the Chinese market, focusing on Chinese businesses doing business in Portugal, Spain, and Latin America, in a similar strategy to that it used in the US. In both cases, the firm has stated that it did not intend to do business in these foreign markets, but instead entered them in order to understand the differences between business cultures.[10]

In 2008 Llorente & Cuenca began operating in Brazil. The first Brazilian office was opened in Rio de Janeiro, and in 2013 they consolidated their presence in Sao Paulo.[11] By 2014 the firm had ten offices in nine South American countries, when it entered the Paraguayan market.[12] In 2011, Llorente and Cuenca both owned 40% of the company each, with 20% distributed among other partners.[13]

In 2013 the company took a 51% stake in the Portuguese consulting Imago. 65% of the firms business is done in Latin America.[8][14][15] During the 2010s the firm began to focus on online reputation management as a part of its business structure moving forward.[16] The firm works with both private interest and non-profits.[17] According to an investigation by the newspaper Expansion published in 2013, Llorente & Cuenca have edited the Spanish Wikipedia article about Repsol following the nationalization of YPF in Argentina, calling the government expropriation "unconstitutional" and deleting content in the article on opinions that supported the nationalization.[18]
