Manithan (English : Mankind) is a 1987 Indian Tamil language film directed by SP. Muthuraman, starring Rajinikanth, Rubini, Raghuvaran, Senthil, Delhi Ganesh, Srividya.^[1][2] The film received moderate reviews from the critics, however, it was declared as a blockbuster and completed 175-day run at the box office. It was dubbed in Telegu as Prabhanjanam and in Hindi as Bihari Gunda.^[3][4]

Plot

The story of a young man who returns from jail after imprisonment on crime he commits for justice during young age. He comes out and again fights for justice in everyway. The story revolves around Raja who grows in Juvenille due to hitting his teacher by table weight for calling him as thief. When his imprisonment years are over, he joins People Welfare Organization in a local community and helps the needy people. In due course, he gets enemies due to his good deeds. The rest of the story forms how Raja succeeded his enemies and proves the false acclaims on him.

Soundtrack

The music was composed by Chandrabose and all songs were chartbusters during the time of release. Lyrics for this film were written by Vairamuthu.^[5] Kaviperarasu Vairamuthu talks about Vanaththaip Parthen Songs (மனிதன்) for the use of the name of the English naturalist Darwin in the text.

Release

The film was screened alongside other films of Rajinikanth like Murattu Kaalai, Pokkiri Raja, Paayum Puli at Albert theatre, on the occasion of his birthday on 12 December 2012.^[10]

Legacy

The film's title inspired a 2016 film of same name directed by I. Ahmed and starring Udhayanidhi Stalin.^[11]
