Marhaura (Hindi:मढ़ौरा) is a town and an administrative sub-divisional area in Saran district in the Indian state of Bihar.[1] It is Marhaura (Vidhan Sabha constituency).
Geography
Marhaura is located at 25°58′N 84°52′E / 25.97°N 84.87°E.[2] It has an average elevation of 52 metres (170 feet).
Demographics
Marhaura has population of 29,932 of which 15,179 are males while 14,753 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 5015 which is 16.75% of total population of Marhaura (NP). In Marhaura Nagar Panchayat, Female Sex Ratio is of 972 against state average of 918. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio in Marhaura is around 934 compared to Bihar state average of 935. Literacy rate of Marhaura is 65.24% higher than state average of 61.80%. Male literacy is around 77.35% while female literacy rate is 52.87%.
Marhaura Nagar Panchayat has total administration over 4,934 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within Nagar Panchayat limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction.
History
The history of Marhaura dates back to Vedic period as the two famous temples situated here have references in sacred Hindu scriptures. In modern period, it was part of British colonization, as old British established factories and buildings are still famous landmarks in the town. The town has a rich industrial history, and more than 3 factories were established, namely Saran Mill, Sugar Factory and Morton Factory. Three of these factories were subsequently closed after the dominance of bad governance in the state of Bihar.
Tourist Attractions
Gardhdevi Temple, one of the best known temples in the region, is situated in Marhaura. Hundreds of people come on Mondays and Fridays to worship in front of the Goddess. A small fair, with lots of local snacks, toys, household items and cosmetic products, operates on these days. Large crowds gather at the time of the Durga Puja.
Rail Diesel Locomotive Engine Factory
Former Rail Minister Lalu Prasad had proposed a rail diesel engine factory in Marhaura, Saran. The land has been acquired, and construction work is scheduled to start soon, with the contract to develop the factory being awarded to the American company GE.[3][4] now construction work of disel engine been started and boundary and land filling work is going on..
