Matthew Holmes (politician)

Matthew Holmes (1817 – 27 September 1901) was a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council from 19 June 1866 to 27 September 1901, when he died.[1]

Born in Strabane, County Tyrone,[2] Ireland, Holmes moved to Australia in 1837, where he married Ann McLean in 1841. After building up a profitable wool exporting company, he and his family moved to Scotland in 1854, where he became involved in a group which became the New Zealand and Australia Land Company. In 1864 the Holmes's moved to Awamoa, near Oamaru in New Zealand's Otago Region, and was owner of large sheep runs both there and at Castlerock in Southland.[3]

Matthew and Ann had six children, among them Isabella, a founder of Dunedin Public Art Gallery,.[3] Isabella married George McLean, who served as a member of parliament in the 1860s and 1870s.[4]
