MellowHype was an American hip hop duo from Los Angeles, California, that consisted of rapper-producer Hodgy Beats (Gerard Long) and producer-rapper Left Brain (Vyron Turner). Both were members of hip hop collective Odd Future. They released two studio albums and four mixtapes before disbanding in January 2015.

Background

2008-10: YelloWhite & BlackenedWhite

Hodgy Beats and Left Brain were founding members of Odd Future, formed in 2007. They did not officially form MellowHype until the release of Odd Future's debut mixtape, The Odd Future Tape, on November 15, 2008. The tracks "Pimp Slap", "McDonalds", and "Malaya" were performed by MellowHype.

On February 24, 2010, MellowHype's debut mixtape, YelloWhite, was released. It contains features from Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and Mike G. On October 31, 2010, MellowHype's second mixtape, BlackenedWhite, was released. It contains features from Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis, and Mike G, among others.

2011-12: BlackenedWhite, MELLOWHYPEWEEK & Numbers

On July 12, 2011, MellowHype re-released BlackenedWhite as their debut studio album. It was released by Fat Possum Records.

On March 20, 2012, Odd Future's debut studio album, The OF Tape Vol. 2, was released. The tracks "50", "Snow White", and "Real Bitch" are performed by MellowHype.

Starting September 11 to September 18, 2012, MellowHype released a track everyday to hold fans over for their second studio album, Numbers. It contains features from Juicy J and Domo Genesis]].

Numbers was released on October 9, 2012. It contains features from Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, and Mike G.

2013-15: MellowHigh, INSA & disbandment

On October 31, 2013, MellowHype's collaborative studio album with Domo Genesis, MellowHigh, was released. It contains features from Smoke DZA, Curren$y, Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and Remy Banks.

On July 4, 2014, MellowHype's fourth and final mixtape, INSA (I Need Some Answers), was released. It contains features from Syd tha Kyd.

On January 18, 2015, Hodgy Beats announced the disbandment of MellowHype.

The soundtrack from Madden 12 features MellowHype's song "On Ya Mind". Hodgy Beats stated on Tumblr that the song was made with Left Brain in high school.
