Meriem Fekkaï

Meriem Fekkai (Arabic: مريم فكاي), sometimes spelled Fekai or Fekkai, was an Algerian singer. Born in 1889 and died in July 18, 1961, Meriem Fekkai is native of Biskra although she was raised in Algiers where she begun and ended her musical career.[1]

She began her singing career rather late, but her talent was such as it had a great success at the time, she played the Hawzi of Arab-Andalusian music and put to music many poems of the Algerian directory.

Meriem Fekkai died July 18, 1961, before she could see her country become independent.

Biography

She comes from a bedouin family descendant of the Banu Soleim arab tribe who have invaded Algeria through the arab-islamic conquest.
