Mickey Pylon
The Mickey Pylon is a 32 metres tall double-deadend pole-type pylon of a 230 kV-powerline in front of Osceola Substation, which is used for the power supply of Disney World in Celebration, Florida, USA and which was completed on February 15th, 1996. The Mickey Pylon, which is a Landmark Tower of Disney World shows a stylizied Mickey Mouse.[1] It consists of a 21.3 metres high pole carrying a circular steel tube ring with 9.1 metres diametre and a weight of 13.608 tons, at which two smaller elliptical rings with axis lengths of 5.5 and 6.1 metres and a weight of 2.495 tons are attached. As the rings were not transportable on public roads, they were designed for an assembly at the construction site. All these rings consist of a galvanized steel tube with a cross section of 0.305 m x 0,508 m. The support pole was fabricated by North American Pole Corp. (NAPCO), Dallas, Texas, USA, while the rings were bent by Bend-Tec of Duluth, Minnesota, USA from steel tubes manufactured in Chicago, Illinois, USA and transported to NAPCO for galvanization. The Mickey Pylon can be illuminated at night by fibre-optic cables at the rings, which are fed from a laser installed at the ground through a elecommunications-grade fiber running inside the pole. For minimizing visual effects polymer insulators are used.
