Momondo (stylised momondo) is a free global travel metasearch engine website, operating in 35 international markets and enabling users throughout the world to find and compare prices on flights, hotels, car hire and package holidays. Momondo does not sell anything: instead it provides an overview of prices and deals available at the time of search, and redirects users to the supplier to complete the booking process.

In addition to its search engine technology, Momondo also provides travel tips and inspirational insights to users via its blog, Inspiration.[1]

History

Momondo was founded in Denmark in 2006 and is headquartered in Copenhagen. As of 2016, the company has more than 200 employees from more than 30 nationalities. When momondo was first launched in September 2006 it was a flight search engine only. In October 2007, the site was relaunched and expanded to include Inspiration, a travel blog. In the same year, the company launched a series of city guides; Momondo places. Since 2007, Momondo has expanded further to include price comparison for hotels,[2] cars and package holidays.

In April 2011, Momondo and Skygate, its parent company at the time, were acquired by the British/American travel search company Cheapflights Media Ltd (now Momondo Group Ltd).[3][4] Momondo continues to operate as an independent subsidiary.

In 2014, Momondo Group sold a majority stake to the American private equity fund Great Hill Partners.[5]

In May 2016, it was reported that Momondo Group had $30 million in first quarter revenue, with Momondo accounting for 60% of that revenue.[6] In November 2016, Ryanair extended its conflict with screenscraping websites (Opodo, CheapOair, etc.) to momondo.[7]

Awards

In 2010, Travel + Leisure named Momondo the best travel website for finding bargain fares .[8]

Frommer’s included Momondo in first place for the travel guidebook’s list “The 10 Best Airfare Search Sites.”[9]

At the Travolution Awards, Momondo received the Best Meta Search Website award in both 2014 and 2015.[10][11]

Momondo has also been well received by global media: in a “Top Travel Websites For Planning Your Next Adventure” feature in Forbes, momondo was found to be “one of the best travel websites for sourcing travel deals with one of the most intuitive meta search engines,”[12] and The New York Times praised the site for its ability to “find combinations of flights that you won’t find anywhere else.”[13]
