Narayan Sai (born 29 January 1972, Narayan Sirumalani/Harpalani),[1] also known as Narayan Prem Sai is an Indian Hindu religious leader.

He is the son of Hindu religious leader Asaram Bapu and brother of Bharti Shriji.[2]

Social welfare programmes

Sai has been involved in various social welfare programmes in India and abroad. He has led projects for poverty alleviation in remote areas of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat along with de-addiction, stress management, environment conservation and disaster relief programmes in all parts of India.[3] He has traveled widely in India, and has also visited many Asian, Middle-Eastern, African, American and European countries to discourse on Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Law).

Sai has held free Yoga and Meditation sessions conducted at the Sindhu Darshan Resort, Leh.[4]

Molestation allegations and imprisonment

Sai was charged with molestation after a Surat-based woman lodged an FIR against him in Jahangirpura Police Station of Surat, accusing him of exploitation and repeated rape between 2002 and 2005.[5] He evaded arrest for two months and was apprehended and arrested on 4 December 2013 in a combined operation of Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana police along the Delhi-Haryana border, and brought to Surat for custody.[6] On 6 December the High Court of Gujarat dismissed his status as absconder, however he remained under arrest for other charges including rape, unnatural sex, molestation, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly, rioting and criminal intimidation.[7][8] Sai was also accused of bribing the local authorities holding him in custody in an attempt to have the case of sexual abuse against him weakened or dismissed.[8] Narayan Sai was released from Surat Jail on interim bail on 26 May 2015 to attend to his ailing mother Laxmi Devi in Ahmedabad.[9]He was sent back to Jail on 29 May 2015.

An unnamed Surat woman requested the court rescind the complaint she lodged against Narayan Sai.[10] She said she originally lodged the complaint against Narayan Sai because of fear and pressure.[10] After this development, supporters claimed there was a high-level conspiracy against Narayan Sai.[10]

Other activities

Sai is founder of Ojaswi Party, a Hindu nationalist political party.[11]

Narayan Sai, along with his pilot and two co-passengers, safely survived a helicopter crash on 14 August 2013.[12]

The Gujarat Police estimate that Narayan Prem Sai has properties and investments worth more than Rs. 5,000 crore.[13]

Personal

Narayan Sai's wife is Jankidevi.[14] They were married for 10 years as of April 2016. In a deposition given in 2016, she described their relationship was "not cordial like it should be between husband and wife," and that Sai spent most of his time with the women of his father's ashram.[14]
