National Computational Infrastructure National Facility (Australia)
The Australian National Computational Infrastructure - National Facility was created in 2007, as a collaboration between the Australian National University and the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (Australia). It is located at the ANU in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, and is operated with participation from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The NCI's Director is Professor Lindsay Botten.[1]
Computer systems
As at November 2009, the NF operates:
- the Vayu (computer cluster)[2]
- an SGI Altix 3700 system
Specialised facilities and programs
NCI has funded, from 2010:
- the Specialised Facility in Bioinformatics, to be hosted by a consortium led by the University of Queensland
- the Specialised Facility in Imaging and Visualisation, to be hosted by a consortium led by Monash University
- a Computational Tools and Techniques (CT&T) system
Research
Research conducted or under way[3] includes:
- Southern Sky Survey, using the ANU's robotic SkyMapper telescope at Mount Stromlo Observatory
- The Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS)
- Medical and materials research
